Signs - Containers for Change

For other signs from around the world please go over to Tom's blog.

On Sunday Jose and I went to the city for a preview of Perth's new Museum - the Western Australia Museum Boola Bardip ("many stories" in the Whadjuk Noongar language) which was inaugurated on the 21st November.

Between the Museum and the State Library of Western Australia  was Marli, the black swan made out of 10,000 plastic bottles, which is equivalent to what our state consumes in just 4 minutes!

This giant five metre high and three meter wide black swan was originally unveiled in Yagan Sqare in Perth's central business district on 18th September, ahead of the 1st of October launch of "Containers for Change" which provides a 10 cent refund for plastic beverage containers.

  2. Impressive statement (and still beautiful!).
Oh, boy. We used maybe 3-4 bottles last time. As in in six weeks, we simply refilled with tap-water at the Caravan Park or in the city.
At home I do the same. Ingo sadly not, but "we" (I) recycle of course.

    1. It certainly is, I wonder how long it took to be made!

  4. What a creative way to draw people's attention to this huge problem of plastic pollution. If only we could get people fill their own containers instead of using plastic bottles, what a difference that would make. It is hard to believe a simple switch of that nature is so hard to achieve. An outright ban is the only answer I am afraid. And hopefully, that is not far off.

    1. Thanks David. I hope you are right but I can't see the world's governments banning plastic containers, but I suppose even a few countries doing it would be better than nothing.

    2. In Canada a whole range of plastics will be banned on 1 January 2021, with a complete prohibition on single use plastics scheduled for 2025.

    3. That is fabulous David. Here, as from last year supermarkets can no longer give away single use plastic bags, but I haven't heard of other bans.

  8. Dearest Sami,
That is a beautifully made Swan!
Don't you have fully recyclable bottles yet?
    Hugs,

    1. Thanks Mariette. Yes the bottles are recyclable but people still discard bottles in normal rubbish bins, or worse. That is why a 10cent refund was introduced last month to encourage people to hand them to recycling depots or machines spread throughout the city.

  9. You had me at Black Swan, then hooked me with this amazing recycling project. This is a wonderful way to educate people about this problem that consumes, not just Perth, but the world today.
