Signs - Manila Bay, Philippines

Signs seen during a walk around Manila Bay, when we were in the Philippines in December 2018.

You might have seen in recent news that the very polluted bay is finally going through a big cleanup that started at the end of January 2019.
On the first day alone 45 tons of garbage was collected with the help of over 5000 people, including volunteers and Government workers!!

This follows the successful example of the rehabilitation of the island of Boracay, which closed for 6 months last year to restore its environment and recovery from uncontrolled expansion.
Hopefully the people will learn and avoid polluting the environment in future.

What is your favourite?  More signs at Signs, signs.

  1. The Philippines is in desperate need of environmental remediation. Let's hope they are serious and don't backslide.

  3. What great signs. I love the one about dog poop and the one about cigarettes. SO environmentally true, yet so often disregarded.

    1. So true Elizabeth, I think lack of education regarding rubbish disposal have contributed to the problem.

  5. It is sad how many Asian countries are so polluted by discarded rubbish. The clean ups are good and I hope they lead to cultural change about the disposal of rubbish. I love the first sign.

    1. I suppose lack of education would be a big contributor to them disregarding proper rubbish disposal. Thanks Andrew.

  6. Não gosto nada de Duterte.
Mas a iniciativa de limpar Manila e Bocaray é de aplaudir.

  7. Well, the first sign isn´t that tempting to me ;-)
But they´re all clever, though I think it´s sad they´re needed. I don´t know, I´m old, I just grew up with the behaviour to take my rubbish with me till I find a bin.
    Not that difficult, either.
But. When I still had my job and we went for lunch and I knew I can only eat half of it I always had a dish with me for the other half.
Yes, you can get it in a plastic dish, but why? And colleagues really made fun of me at first. People who have studied had no sense of it....

    1. It all comes from your education at home and then at school. I was also taught to not leave rubbish behind, but I notice a lot of Asian countries don't have that sort of culture.

  9. My favourite? the one with chocolate of course :) Great humour in these signs.
Thailand has also made a similar pledge to reduce ocean rubbish - let's hope the message gets through at not just the political level.

  10. I would have said the first sign once Sami but I seem to have lost my sweet tooth.. thank goodness 😉 Thank heavens for the volunteers helping with the clean up, I really don't understand how people can just dump their rubbish, often within sight of a bin 😱

  14. Dearest Sami,
Love the one about the only planet with chocolate!
Just like we observed in Indonesia, their concept of keeping the environment clean is so different from ours...

Sadly that is true about most Asian countries Mariette, hope that changes in the near future with more education.
