Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach

Around 250,000 visitors visited the 15th annual Sculpture by the Sea which was held at Cottesloe Beach from the 1st March until the 18th March.

With over 70 sculptures by local and foreign artists it's Western Australia's biggest free event. Sadly due to the lack of sponsorship this event is in danger of being the last one.
I hope not, as it is a fabulous and popular event and brings a lot of tourists to the area too.

If you follow Grace, you might have seen some of the sculptures when she posted about her visit in early March.

These were my favourites in no specific order.

Some of them looked familiar and looking back at my photos of the Bondi in Oct/Nov 2018,
I managed to match a few of them.
The Sydney photo on the left and the Perth photo on the right (or top and bottom).

Cottesloe Beach with some of the sculptures scattered on the sand

Across the road inside a pop-up pavilion there was an exhibition with the maquettes or scale models of some of the current and past sculptures, which were for sale.
They were beautiful and dainty, something you could have on your bookshelf if you had a bit of money to spare.

I look forward to seeing a couple of the statues scattered around Perth, as usually a few councils buy statues to put in their parks, new developments, etc.

Which was your favourite?

  1. These really are beautiful. With that level of visitors, it should continue, even if it's the federal government shouldering the sponsorship. The economic spinoffs of hundreds of thousands of people attending the event make it worthwhile.

    1. I agree that maybe not the Federal, but State government should be contributing to keep this event alive. Thanks William.

  2. It would be a great shame to see this event cease operations. Perhaps instead of it being free there could be a modest admission fee, or even a voluntary contribution. I am sure many people would happily contribute a few bucks.

    1. I noticed they had a few volunteers with collection boxes all over the beach and at the entrance to the pavilion, and posters asking people to contribute, mas not many did, which is sad. They can't really close off the event and ask for an entry fee as it's held at the beach.

  7. Oh no, Sculpture by The Sea just belongs to Cottesloe, it can´t have been the last one!
Really, I´d also pay a fee for sure.
Oh, my, I really don´t know if I´ll post about it, too ;-)

Oh, the exhibition on the other side wasn´t open yet, thanks for showing (and phew, I would´ve SO wanted a piece but am not rich enough ;-)...)
The Ipomoea was my favorite. It took me a while but I even managed a video of it. But (nearly) all were wonderful!

    1. Of course you should post your photos of the sculptures Iris.
That Ipomoea (green leaf)sure moved fast, it was fun. The video would be great to see the movement that photos don't show.

  11. Dearest Sami,
So at the end you give the answer to my question about all those previous years' statues. Some are bought and placed in parks. They really are special and it seems a very good tourist attraction with 250,000 visitors.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  12. This is fascinating. Some really unique things here and well photographed, too, Sami! I can't believe it is free. I do hope they can find a corporate sponsor for it -- more than one event I know of has gone down for those reasons and it is always so sad when it is a particularly good and well loved event.

    1. Thanks Jeanie. I do hope they find the sponsors to keep the event going, as it's a fabulous way for the artists to expose their work and an open-air museum for the visitors.
