Monday Mural - Lisbon Underground city

Quite a few of Lisbon's underground (subway) stations are decorated with fabulous tile panels, but I found this to be one of the most fascinating.
It can be found at the Oriente station, and was designed by Austrian born artist and architect Hundertwasser (Friedrich Stowasser - 1928/2000), based on his graphic works 686 Good morning city, and executed during 1996/98 by the tile factory "Fábrica Cerâmica Viúva Lamego" in Sintra and Lisbon.

If you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme is for you; just follow the Linky steps below.   Be sure to link back to this blog and visit your fellow posters.  Looking forward to your mural finds this week.  Thank you.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth, glad you liked it. Unfortunately I didn't travel much on the underground, but most stations in Lisbon have a lot of tiled murals on their walls and sometimes even statues.

    1. Yes I suppose so, if the walls are already covered with some pretty artwork, taggers don't damage it. Thanks Marco.

  15. This one makes me feel like I'm looking down out the window of a skyscraper, seeing a viewpoint most of us miss. I wonder if the artist needed to take breaks from painting all those rectangles! I'd get dizzy! And what a great idea to join this with a link party! Off now to see about that big black cat face!

  16. From a construction/technique point of view this is particularly interesting. Since all those tiles had to have been painted/glazed and then fired before they went up on the wall, he had to have them laid out as he worked on it to make sure the windows lined up and all the other details made sense. So, they'd have to be numbered, then fired and reassembled. Which leads me to believe he had a very large studio. Any other potters/tile people in there know more about this?

    1. The panel was designed by the artist but it was a famous tile factory that made the tiles. It took about 2 years for the panel to be made and assembled. A lot of work!!

  17. I've always liked his work but hadn't seen any pics of this one! They may have produced the tiles at a commercial tile company.

What a wonderful executed tile mosaic after Hundertwasser's design. Wondering if he still got to see the end results...
You have shown us the most extraordinary murals the world has to offer.
