We've just returned from a 3-day weekend in Cervantes, a cray fishing town about 2 hours north of Perth, also known as the gateway to the Nambung National Park, home to the Pinnacles Desert.
The town was established in 1961 to accommodate the cray fishing industry workers and was named after the American whaling ship "Cervantes" that was wrecked there in 1844.
Almost all of the town's streets are named after Spanish towns, alluding to Miguel de Cervantes, the Spanish writer.
In March this year the water tank at the local Primary school received a new lease of life thanks to a collaboration between Water Corporation and local artist Kiera of "Sea Spray Art" and the school community.
The tank that used to irrigate the school grounds now features local marine and bird life, the nearby Pinnacles and the connection to the water, glimpsed through giant portholes - showcasing potential local employment opportunities in tourism, agriculture, aquaculture, marine and environmental conservation.

We had also camped in Cervantes in October 2023 and I posted about the murals I saw then in this post: https://sami-colourfulworld.blogspot.com/2024/03/monday-murals-sea-shells-and-pinnacles.html
The scale of the photos is hard to figure out: it looks as if this is a very small water tank. But the murals are delightful
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting all the murals. I just read about a controversy (or maybe a feud) about “graffifi alley” where it’s legal to paint murals in our town. I’ll have to go look at it!
best, mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Not so small Mae - the tank would be about 2mt high and 5mt wide (6.56 ft) and 5mt wide (16.40 ft). Thanks
DeleteWhat a clever project! Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it very much and thank you for hosting. Aloha!

DeleteCervantes - what an original name for a cray fishing town near Perth, dear Sami! Do the street names make you feel a bit like you're in Spain?
ReplyDeleteThe tank has been given a great new life - very nice, all the children, portholes, sea creatures, kangaroos and so much else that makes up beautiful Australia! But I wonder where Don Quixote and his windmills are... ;-)
Today I'm linking another "slightly different" mural, namely the historical ceiling painting from the Vienna Musikverein hall. I hope you like it as much as I do!
All the best, Traude
