Monday Mural - Housing Bubble

I found this mural in the inner suburb of Newtown, when I visited Sydney last month.

The sun was shining directly into it so it was difficult to capture it well.
Called "Housing Bubble", it was painted by Australian street artist Fintan Magee in 2015, on the facade of the Urban Hotel on Enmore Road.

  1. ...sometimes the lighting doesn't give you a break! Housing in some areas is out of reach for many. Thanks for hosting Sami.

    1. Thanks Tom. Housing prices are specially high in Sydney, the median price is almost double the Perth's one, but they've already fallen lately.

  3. Australia must be the mural capital of the world, and there are some really creative works. I guess you won't be going to Sydney so much any more, Sami, so you will have to find more art around Perth for us to enjoy.

    1. Thanks David. I don't think I'll be going to Sydney any time soon, luckily but there's plenty of murals around Perth too, and new ones being painted every year.

  4. This is an incredible mural, Sami. When supply exceeds demand in any market, those bubbles occur. It appears this family has seen the bubble rise above their reach. I actually saw this mural as an allegory. It was beautiful, even sun drenched.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth. The Sydney housing market must leave many people living beyond their means.

  7. Housing Bubble. Aptly named. And the mural seems to be in a place that's just right too.
    Superb find, Sami.

    And thank you for hosting.
    Have a great week. :)

  8. This is an interesting one. Housing in Germany is a huge issue at the moment - in cities like Berlin, Hamburg etc. people cannot afford it, costs for landlords rise but they´re not allowed to take more money from tennants, it´s crazy.
"Funny", Ingo always says, remember, in Sydney the houses are so huge, there was never any sun on the street...

    1. Sadly housing bubbles all over the world. But Sydney prices are really over the top, almost double Perth's median price.

  12. The artist really found a vivid way to express this thought: making the symbolic bubble into real bubbles.

  15. Dearest Sami,
It is hard to understand what the artist is saying here...
Balloons going up into the air with a little house, maybe a dream-house?
But what does the woman on the man's back signify?!

    Mariette

    1. This is what I found about the explanation for this mural Mariette:
“The Housing Bubble” depicts a man on all fours, struggling under the weight of a woman who sits on his back. Above these two figures is a classic Newtown terrace house that’s floating away on a bunch of balloons. The symbolism is fairly straightforward: It’s a direct comment on Sydney’s housing crisis, the rapid gentrification of Newtown and the working class people who’ve been priced out of their neighbourhood.

    2. Dearest Sami,
Guess because both, Pieter and I have been teaching all our life, we are so used to explain what we (or the students/others) are looking at. This makes sense and I sure wish you had included it in your post!
      Hugs,
      Mariette
