Perth winter lights festival and French solidarity

I tend to hibernate in winter as I'm not a fan of the cold...
Of course I have to leave the house to go to work during the day, but I tend to stay indoors at night to avoid the coldest part of the day.

Last night, at a friend's invitation, we went into the city centre after work to meet up for dinner at Oliver's on James street in Northbridge.

Lucky for me the evening was actually quite pleasant, not cold at all, maybe because the day temperature had gone up to 20C (68F). Of course I was rugged up as if going on an expedition to the Everest!

For dinner I had "Bobotie" which is a South African curried mince dish.
I was surprised to see it on the menu, and the last time I made it at home was probably about 3 or 4 years ago so I ordered it.
I guess either the chef or the owner might be South African due to the name of some of the dishes.

After dinner, on our way home we drove past St George's Terrace to have a look at the Winter Lights Show at the 3 Brookfield Place heritage buildings, which is on from 6pm till midnight, having started on the 7th July and ending on the 7th of August.
I know it's just a small show, but we enjoyed the lights accompanied to music.

Further down the street the Perth City council house was light with the French flag colours to once more show solidarity with the French people over the terrorist attack in Nice.
When will people respect life and each other and end all these bloody wars?

The Swan Bell tower was also lit up in the French colours.

Hopefully you're also having a good and peaceful weekend.

    Bom fim-de-semana, Sami!

  2. I really enjoy the light shows, it's a nice way to bright up the dark winter days. I'm guessing you won't be visiting Sweden in the winter soon? ;)
It's really sad what has been happening a bit everywhere. It is indeed time to stop!

    1. Thanks Sara. Oh no, not Sweden in winter...I remember when I lived in Germany and we used to have snow in winter, I think I tolerated the cold better, now that I'm older I really avoid the cold.

  3. The Bell Tower looks good. These lighting displays begin on a small scale but before you know it, half the city will be lit up and the lighting will creep outside of the city boundaries.

    1. Thanks Andrew, it might be good if the light show grows to encompass other streets, it would bring more people out at night.

  4. Just last night I saw a German ad of Jamie Oliver and said to Ingo, "oh, I still haven´t seen all the 30-minute-meals-movies I bought in Perth!"

Hmmm, your meal looks delicious! Perfect for winter, too. ("Winter - do you remember the winters here? ;-)"

    Such a beautiful light-intstalation!

Yes. So bad and sad. And France is just next door so us, too.
I wonder.. If there was.."no religion..."... right?

    1. When my friend said she had booked a table at Oliver's I thought it was Jamie Oliver's restaurant, but that one is actually called "Jamie's". Haven't been there yet! Yes, I do remember the long winter in Germany, the snow...I much prefer warmer weather, maybe the fact I born in Africa and almost always lived in warm climates...

  5. I find your winter weather more like spring here. Winter for me is below 20 F or 0 C. I do love your winter lights, though, and the food looks quite lovely. Do stay warm, so you can make it through these winter months.

I was delighted to see the memorial to Nice. It's such a shame. France has more than had its share of hate crimes this past year or so.

    1. That's true, Perth winters are very mild and short. I agree France has been badly affected by terrorism. Very sad.

  6. What a great light show on the buildings. The terrorist attack in Nice has a huge impact here. So many people have been there once going to the South of France for some sunshine. We were there 4 years ago at the same place. It is incredible what is going on in some people minds, to decide I am going to kill as many people as I can....

    1. I can imagine Europeans will be more affected than those living further away, as you say plenty of them go to the south of France for holidays.
