Another one of the murals under the same bridge (Ponte de Pau) from the previous mural in the city of Aveiro, Portugal. Painted in 2014 by Fabio Carneiro.
The mural entitled "Atita - Shark of the oceans" honours the illustrious local swimmer Eduardo Raposo Rodrigues de Sousa (1932-2017), nickname Atita by his family.
From an early age he took up swimming, and as a swimming teacher taught over 10 thousand kids to swim.
He was also a regional swimming champion of the 100mt, 400mt and 1500mt representing Sport Club Beira-Mar.
Atita was one of the first to teach disabled kids as well as older people to swim. He contributed to the training of local firefighters, aspiring divers, was a lifeguard at the local pools and beaches and saved over 30 people, which earned him a silver medal from the Lifesaving Rescue institute.
Just 3 days before his death at the age of 85 in December 2017, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of of Civil Merit from the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
...this is a wonderful tribute. Thanks Sami for hosting the party, enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom
DeleteIt's good that he received the award before he died, rather than posthumously. It's an incredible mural.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely, it would have made him so proud. Thanks Elizabeth
DeleteQuite a life story! That's a lot of lives saved.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this blog party.
best, mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thanks Mae :)
DeleteA worthy water man and a beautiful tribute. We respect the ocean here in Hawaii also and have many great watermen and women. Carissa Moore is the current women's surfing golden medal winner. All the best for a wonderful week Sami!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cloudia. Congratulations to Carissa!
DeleteThat mural is a stunner. The life story is memorable.
ReplyDeleteThanks Roentare, it's a great story.
DeleteInteresting back story. A little strange but still, very well done.
ReplyDeleteA shark and a squid with the man's head, although I think the squid part could have been left out. Thanks Andrew
DeleteO nosso PR está em todas.
ReplyDeleteGosto mesmo dele.
Boa semana
Ah sim, ele gosta de estar no meia da malta :) Obrigada Pedro
DeleteWonderful story behind that mural. I say it again. If I was to start all over I would become a history teacher and at the end of each lesson I would take 5 minutes to teach real history from bloggers like you! There is so much to learn.
ReplyDeleteThis summer many refugees here drowned cause they were not taught to swim. And it was a cold, nasty summer...
My Nieces were taught before they went to school... for money (you get that later at school for free, but that can be too late).
Sadly too many kids don't learn to swim. Because so many people have pools here and the beach of course, most kids learn to swim privately and in school too. Thanks Iris.
DeleteI love this. i love everything about this. Including gettting recognised before his death. Fabulous share!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lydia. It was lucky it was just days before he died.
DeleteGreat mural works, Thanks for sharing the story.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for hosting. Have a nice week ahead.
Thank you Rupam, enjoy the rest of your week too.
DeleteI know the mural well, Sami, but had no idea of the history of the man. He sounds like a legend. Thanks so much for your visit to mine. I must round you up some more street art.
ReplyDeleteThanks Johanna. I think probably every mural has a story, we just don't know most of them :)
DeleteWhat an amazing man (and a great mural). Many thanks for introducing him.
ReplyDeleteThank you A :)
DeleteA great but also a bit creepy mural for that man as swim teacher and saver of lives. Stil a tribute anyway.
ReplyDeleteThanks SC. I think the tentacles make it a bit creepy, they could have just done the shark behind the man.
DeleteWe need more of his ilk, rather than grasping, seedy, manipulative, unscrupulous, slimy, despicable politicians and greedy industrialists. Those are the very people we elect and support to run our affairs. How gullible we are!
ReplyDeleteThanks David. Sadly the nicer, loyal, trustworthy people don't run for office.
DeleteThat is a good tribute to him, Sami.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pat.
DeleteThat's a little creepy Interesting but creepy. His own life -- wow.
ReplyDeleteI think the squid tentacles are too much, they could have just stuck with the shark behind his head. Thanks Jeanie
DeleteWhat a very accomplished man he was. That's a great mural to honor him.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sharon :)
DeleteWhat a lovely tribute, a great mural.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thank you Jan :)
DeleteThat’s a strange picture to honor someone. Reminds me of a pirate. I messed up when I was trying to link up so my thumbnail is missing.
ReplyDeleteThe tentacles make it look a bit weird. Thanks Linda.
DeleteQuite a tribute.
ReplyDeleteThanks William.
