September Wrap-Up

My husband celebrated his birthday on the 5th. This year we didn't do anything special to celebrate, I baked him a simple cheesecake and we went out to dinner with another couple who we've know for 36 years.

The cats celebrated their 13th birthday on the 17th. Fluffy seems to be going deaf, Twiggy has arthritis and limps when she jumps out of bed after her long naps and Shelley who has always been overweight seems to be the healthiest at the moment.

Shelley, Fluffy and Twiggy

One of doves that visit our backyard nested in our Bottlebrush tree. A couple of weeks ago two babies hatched, and just today after a few days of climbing around some of the branches, they have taken their first flight.  Mother Dove still eats the bird seed we put in the feeder, so hopefully the babies will follow suit.

I finished painting a table and chairs for a lady I met via my suburb's "Buy Nothing FB group", and she was thrilled with the result. Her room seems so much brighter now.

She eventually would like me to paint the rest of her dining room furniture. She has now bought fabric to reupholster the chairs, and I've offered to help her with it.

The bedside tables I bought on Marketplace at the end of last month were painted in pink and sold the day after I finished them.

And this is what the bedside tables and table and chairs looked like... What do you think?

I managed to score a lino floor for free on FB Marketplace, and now I have a "wood-like floor" to stage my pieces before advertising them for sale.

The wood like free lino to stage the furniture

Mid month I took the train into the city to meet up with two ex-colleagues.  We walked around Perth's Cultural Centre and to take a peek into the new WA Museum Boola Bardip, which is reopening to the public on the 21st November after 4 years of renovations and building.

In the area there is a Community Garden, which is very well looked after, with lots of herbs, some veggies, fruit and being Spring some wildflowers.

Plenty of colour in the city - an orange racing car, a piano covered in Aboriginal art, the colourful pavements leading to the Technical college, a pink food caravan and a rainbow    table and seat.

We had a simple lunch at Yagan Square and the three of us caught the train home.

On the 27th, the Western Australian Portuguese Australian Women's Association hosted a High-Tea event for women only at the Scarborough Life Saving Club in the suburb of Scarborough.

The event sold out in the first or second week it was advertised, and it was attended by 77 ladies, and we had a couple of guest speakers - a Portuguese psychologist who talked about Mental Health issues and Domestic Violence and we had a young lady who talked about her personal story about suffering emotional abuse and how she got out of the relationship.

We had a door prize and sold raffles for a few goodies donated to the Association.

The day before the event, while some of the Committee members set up the room and decorated the tables, I was in my kitchen making mini-sandwiches, using 9 loaves of bread.

By golly, I had no idea of the amount of hours I would be spending making sandwiches for that crowd... but I will remember it for the next events and ask that the work be more fairly shared.

Anyway the event was a success and so was the food - far too many mini-cakes, sandwiches and quiches.

At the end of the event, a lot of people helped us clean up the hall, wash dishes, etc and the left over food was taken home by the Committee members.

When we locked up the sun was setting over Scarborough Beach.

Hope you all had a great month too 👩.

  2. Dearest Sami,
    Happy belated birthday to José.
Amazing what you all are allowed to do in your area!
Here such gatherings are not permitted... Sadly so.
Your painting job looks oh so professional and no wonder that lady is happy!
No wonder also that your bedside tables got sold next day. Magazine worthy.
As for the kitties, it seems that arthritis is also affecting our pets. I'm giving each day a noon snack to all of them and Spooky boy who had an arthritis problem with his right hind leg, and also Barty boy, the eldest of 16.5 are getting some pill pockets in which I've squeezed drops of NHV Turmeric: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/375980268896626874/?nic_v2=1a1Y0Xlct
    They walk and jump fine!
    Hugs,

    1. Thank you Mariette, we are lucky that in the state of Western Australia we haven't had community transmission for about 6 months, so we basically lead normal lives, just have our borders closed to the other States. Thank for the tip about the turmeric for the cats, will have to get that for them.

  6. The table and chairs look very well done. While I am not a pink person, the drawers look much better than they did. Maybe you can give up your day job and just restore furniture.
The cakes on stands look delicious and so well presented.

    1. Thanks Andrew. That would be my dream, but not sure if I would get a steady income just selling painted furniture. Sadly a lot of people don't value the time and effort you put into crafts or unique pieces, and offer you ridiculous prices they wouldn't offer if they bought the same piece in a shop.
The mini cakes were all made by a Portuguese confectionery.

  11. Hello Sami,
Happy belated birthday to your hubby and to the kitties. They are sweet cats.
Your doves are pretty too, I have not seen baby doves. They must grow quickly. The furniture makeovers are awesome, well done. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a happy weekend! PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

  12. Hi Sami :) The food looks YUMMY!!! Happy birthday to your hubby! I think the table looks awesome, in fact all of the pieces you got look so much better after you painted them! Oh your kitties. We have cats too, 2 of them are probably around 10, and the other is around 6. Our dogs are getting older though, hate to see them age! :)

  14. You have had a wild and cray month. Your cats are gorgeous -- it must be hard to see them getting a little older. And oh, all those sandwiches for the event? Wow -- you're good. Everything looked really pretty. And I adore ALL your furniture! Bravo!

    1. Thank you Jeanie. The sandwiches took many hours to make, but I've had great feedback about them. But, I won't me ever making them on my own again...

  15. You've been very busy! My dad was Portuguese, and I remember as a child going to a gathering of families in a park to eat and visit. It got fairly loud with everyone trying to talk louder than the next person :) I love your repaint work. Looks very professional. I personally know It's a bummer getting older, even for cats. Are they all siblings? They look so sweet.

    1. Hi Yvonne. Really sounds like a Portuguese gathering, everybody talking loudly. Although I e seen that in other European cultures too.
Yes, it's terrible getting older for us too, but personally I sometimes forget my age, and think I'm half my age, lol. The 3 cats are siblings. Born from 2 mothers, they were 8 kittens at birth, and we got 5 adopted and my son wanted to keep Fluffy, the ginger one, and then the other 2, Shelley and Twiggy didn't get adopted because they were uglier I presume, so we kept them.

  16. You put a whole lot of work into those sandwiches. I hope next year, you get help making them. An assembly line would have made things much easier and quicker.

The cats still look quite lovely, but since Squiggles is overweight, I am encouraged that he will live a long life like Bleubeard has. I hope your three are happy and (at least semi) healthy as they age.

I'm NOT a fan of painting wooden furniture, but these turned out great. And I admit, they all look lovely.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth. For sure next time I won't be making sandwiches alone, we will have to divide the job, when I accepted the task I had no idea how much work it was going to be!
Shelley is the healthiest even though she's overweight, although I worry she will get diabetes.

  17. Another busy month Sami. That sure was a lot of sandwich making but I guess it's always better to have too much than not enough :) the event sounds like it was a huge success xx
