Monday Mural - It's like a jungle sometimes

I found this mural when I visited Newtown, a quirky inner city suburb of Sydney, when I visited a couple of weeks ago.
This mural was originally painted over a decade ago by local artist Colin Bebe on the side of a terrace house on the corner of King and Enmore streets.
It depicts animals in an  urban streetscape and the words "It's like a jungle sometimes", a reference to a song by New York Hip Hop group Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.

In September 2017 an advertising agency painted it over (without approval by local authorities) with a mural promoting the thriller "Mother" starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem (photo below).
There was a huge uproar by the community and the film's Hollywood director Darren Aronofsky had to apologize for the desecration of the popular mural and offered to  pay for the original mural to be repainted.

If you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme is for you.

Looking forward to your mural finds this week. Thanks, Sami.

In the veranda of the adjoining house I spotted another mural.

And this was the mural that replaced the original for a very short time.

  1. at least Aronovski's attitude was elegant in the circumstances. The fresco on the jungle is still more peaceful with that beautiful blue. Have anice week.

  5. That's a great story. Murals are no doubt very impermanent, and it's nice when one is loved enough for its own protection.

    1. It must have been very loved for the community to get upset about what happened. Thanks Mae.

The very last one is a lovely mural, the first one is just wild...

  7. There is more than a little arrogance involved in painting over a mural without permission from the landowner.

    1. I think so too David, and no permission from the Council either.

  9. Good to know that commercialism isn't allowed to run rampant at times. Newtown is a bit of a jungle at times.

    1. The jungle was painted back Marianne, as the "Mother" mural was illegally painted.

  15. I like the jungle mural, it's a happy feeling mural. It's too bad the "Mother" one got painted over, it's a beauty but not following the rules is not good.
Enjoy your day, Sani and have a great new week.

  16. What caught my eye was the murals of the people who appear to be in cages.

    1. They aren't in cages Jackie, it's the fence of the cottage. The mural seems to be of musicians but haven't been able to find any info about it.

  18. Wow, I'm impressed. I can't believe it had to be painted twice. Mother is lovely. Why couldn't they have found a LEGAL place to paint it.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth, that's right they could have found another spot to paint "Mother" and it would still be around.

  23. Oh I'm so happy they restored the old mural Sami, ads for movies were never meant to be painted as murals, at least I don't think so, movie posters are bad enough 😀
