Monday Mural - Old world trams

This wonderful mural at 824 Beaufort Street in the suburb of Mount Lawley, was painted by Canadian born, Perth based artist Mel McVee aka Melski.

Painted on a wall between a dentist's car park and the Mondo Butcher and Delicatessen, it represents the old world of Perth's trams when up to 130 trams would go past Beaufort street.
Now it's just cars...

  1. Well, that´s quite an hommage!
We still have both, bus and tram and if I use public transport I prefer the tram here. Not 130, though, wow, that sure was a lot!

  2. I love trams too, it's a pity we don't get those in Perth. I wonder why they did away with them?

Do you still have the trams in Perth? I have a long-time mate that lives there and I will be sure to share this with him.
    Have a Wonderful Week!!

  6. It sounds like it was an excellent service. Bet you wish it was restored. I feel that way about our now dismantled train and trolley system. Lovely mural to remember it by. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

    1. Thanks for hosting the Monday Mural. Trams in certain areas of Perth would probably be a good idea...

  7. A very pretty mural, sad the trams have all gone by now. I like to sit in a tram in Amsterdam and watch everthing going by.

  9. As I said in my last post - I should get out more! I had no idea there were so many beautiful murals in Perth until I discovered your blog Sami! Your post inspired me to google old Perth images and I found this which shows some pictures of the old trams. Hard to comprehend it is the same place - we've knocked down so many beautiful old buildings here in Perth it breaks your heart!!http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=old+footage+of+perth+trams&FORM=VIRE3#view=detail&mid=91CBEB42D374A16ABE7691CBEB42D374A16ABE76

    1. Thanks Wendy. I didn't know Perth when it had the old buildings, but I've seen old TV programs about Perth when some of those oldies were around, and it is a pity that they were knocked down. That's what makes Europe special is the old buildings, the history attached to them....Although now I think people have come to their senses and they are being kept.

  10. Lovely, colourful way to remember Perth's trams, Melbourne still has trams and indeed has made some of the trips in the CBD free, You can always start the bring back Perth trams campaign if you get out your paintbrush Sami!!!
    Have fun

    1. That's wonderful that the CBD trips are free. Here we have free buses within the city centre, but no more trams. Thanks Wren.

  11. Dearest Sami,
Good that this artist went through the effort in showing the world what used to be. Such trams are very special. In Toronto we recently saw them and at the time we worked as consultants in Australia we had them in the Melbourne traffic (scary for us, having a tram coming our way and not knowing which side to go...). In The Netherlands we still have them as well and in San Francisco, even if they're called Street Cars.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Hi Mariette, I can relate to not "remembering" which side of the street I should be on, I can imagine with a tram coming your way, that must have been scary!
I went on a few trams in Amsterdam, my daughter had 2 different lines 5 minutes away from her place, so we tried both to see different things on our route.
