Fremantle and an update on my cat Baby

It's been a busy start to the year for me, with lots to do around the garden - we have been renovating it for a few months, a little bit at a time when it's not too hot...

Then there's my sick Cat - Baby - who was again admitted to the vet hospital for 2 days just over a week ago, suffering from dehydration due to vomiting. It was confirmed she suffers from a cancerous bile duct obstruction to the liver and her prognosis is poor without a very expensive operation or chemotherapy...

Two days later she managed to escape from my husband while resting in the garden. This was close to sunset, and we looked around for her for a few hours, went to the park across the road with flashlights, looked under every bush in our garden, and nothing!

I was devastated and tearful when she didn't appear the next morning and I thought the worst had happened - she must have fled to die off alone somewhere!
That evening when my husband returned from work he went around the 10 houses or so that comprise our street and no one had seen the cat.
On the second evening our son and daughter in law came to dinner and as we opened the door when they were leaving at around 10,30 at night, there stands Baby drinking from the water bowl I had left outside! You can't imagine my relief...

I quickly gave her all the meds and syringe fed her. About three days later she started eating on her own again. She is still thin, but is eating reasonably well. I'll carry on giving her the homeopathic drops and all other natural cures I have been researching, such as baking soda with honey, beetroot and carrot juice...
Hopefully something will work, if not I have to accept defeat and let her go in peace...

On a brighter note, last week I took an overseas visiting friend to Fremantle for lunch and for a walk around some of the city's interesting spots.

She was fascinated with Kakulas Sister, an old-fashion grocery store that sells some of it's wares by weight - flours, dried fruit, beans. They have articles from all over Europe and a great selection of teas, coffees, olive oils.
They are located in a building that formerly housed the Princess Theatre built in 1912.
Inside, in one of the corners the original wallpaper was kept, which I thought was a very interesting way to show the buildings former life.

Lovely planters made out of pallets are seen around the shopping areas of Fremantle

A few blocks away in Point Place I spotted this mural called "Art Noveau Style girl" painted in October 2013 by ArtbyDestroy

Next to the Many6160 building (in Kings Square) that I mentioned in this post from October last year, I saw these cement posts that had been artfully painted in various colours. They were certainly elevated from a boring traffic blocking device to a work of art. They were painted by Horatio T. Birdbath in 2012.

After a lovely lunch we walked to the harbour, so I could show my friend this amazing statue dedicated to the Fishermen. You can read the story in my post about Public Art in Fremantle.

Have a lovely week and hope you enjoyed seeing a few more of Fremantle's highlights.

Kakulas Sister sure went on my Perth-list! Really interesting! Beautiful mural, missed that last time, too... Best wishes from here.

  2. That must have been dreadful not knowing where baby had got to for a couple of days, but glad she is back home now. you are doing everything you can, and I hope she continues to improve. That looks like an awesome grocery store, i would have a hard time limiting my purchases.

  4. Oh poor little Baby.. so glad she found her way home Sami, that would have been awful for you not knowing where she was. It's just so hard when pets get sick, let's hope she improves with the meds. I love Kakulas Sisters, I found some delicious French lemonades when I was in there the last time, went into Kakulas Brothers today to buy some more.. no luck, they stock different things!

    1. Thanks Rachel for joining my blog. I'm trying everything, hope I can manage to turn things around for Baby, as it's very hard to let go when she is still so young, only 8.
