This mural brings attention to the fact that nowadays fewer than 2500 gouldian finch are left in the wild, threatened by changing fire practices that reduce food availability and also the thousands of birds that used to be trapped for the aviary trade until 1981. These birds can be found just south of Darwin.
Australian birds are much more colorful than the ones we see here. These murals really look neat, with the background being sort of abstract and the birds quite realistic == and huge.

DeleteI can see why the yellow faced finches are so rare. They are the pettiest of all. This is a beautiful mural and works well with that building.
ReplyDeleteThanks Elizabeth, the birds are quite pretty and the yellow is the prettiest indded.

DeleteBeautiful birds and mural!
ReplyDeleteOh, I think I would be lost in Darwin these days. Would love to come back and see all the beautiful murals.
Thanks Iris. I'm sure Darwin would be unrecognizable to you.
DeleteBeautiful and educational all in one go. And he has made great use of that curved wall.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie :)
DeleteReal beautiful birds. Looks like just escaped from paradise.
ReplyDeleteThanks SC. Certainly birds of paradise :)
DeleteTo see Gouldian Finches in the wild would be a dream come true for me, but I am really starting to doubt whether I will ever be able to visit Australia again. COVID scuttled my plans last year and again this year. I had every intention to visit in July 2022, mere months from now, but the turmoil with international travel and the lack of satisfactory travel insurance has led me to cancel again.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you are no longer travelling this year again David. Our state will be opening on the 5th February, once we reach the 90% vaccination, but nothing is yet straight forwards -apart from the vax certificate we need to test before we go anywhere and test again before returning and then again 5 days upon return. Will we ever get back to normal?!!
DeleteI love those colorful birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon.
DeleteLovely mural. I like these colorful birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda :)
DeleteWe get finches here but not as colorful as those!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tanya. I've never seen these around Perth either.
DeleteSuch wonderful colourful birds :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
