“I’m a proud Yurruma Jilarringa and Tiwi islander to be able to shine and continue the conversation and awareness for our human rights,” she said.
“I’m not representing myself but all the other girls, my fellow Tiwi sistergirls.
“This is a incredible and a historical piece to celebrate our achievements to acceptance and respect in being ourselves.
“Tiwi Island is leading the way to show that acceptance and love is important to the LGBTIQ+ community.”
“Sistergirl” is the indigenous Australian term for transgender women, with trans men known as “brotherboys”.
This is an amazing mural, Sami. I love the Pride concept behind this mural, too. It's a great message that needs no words, and a beautiful mural.

ReplyDeleteMost of the murals I saw in Darwin were gigantic, the artists use a cherry picker. Thanks Nancy.

Thanks Dee, indeed a great tribute mural.
DeleteOh, back then in Sydney (1995) I didn´t know that term but there was a Sistergirl you had to be careful with, if you were pretty. She pushed beautiful girls onto the street... I was wearing old jeans and t-shirt - we were selling our car in King´s Cross traveler´s car market, where it was cold - but just in case when getting lunch... I went on the other side of the road.
ReplyDeleteShe was huge and in high heels and the skirt so short... you could see... and sadly always on drugs or such.
This mural shows a different Sistergirl, I love it and weeee, it´s really huge.
I had never heard of that term either. That one in Sydney sounds scary :)
DeleteUm belo mural.
