This is one of the murals I photographed in July, when we visited friends that were renovating an investment property in Subiaco.
Painted in 2016 by Perth artist Melski McVee in a laneway off Rokeby Street, on the side wall of Perth's Cat Cafe.
The 9mt high mural called "Subiaco was build on a Sunday" portrays Subiaco's rich retail history and the name refers to the fact that in the early 20th century, a local company developed kit homes which allowed land owners to build their own houses. Since most men worked , which refers to the fact that men in the area worked from Monday to Saturday, building would usually take place on Sundays.
That is a splendid mural. I love the primitive style of this artist.
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thanks Mae. She always uses those bright primary colours in her murals.
DeleteYou have quite a collection of murals!!
ReplyDeleteSo many around Perth, many that I haven't yet seen and many being painted lately as well. Thanks Catarina

Deleteoh that's very cool, it's like one of those pictures where everytime you look you see something different.
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy, yes there's so much to discover in that huge mural.
DeleteThis is so colorful and bright. I love how this mural combines both realism and artistic license to create this really LARGE mural. So well done and a great explanation of the mural's name. Sorry I got busy working on my back yard and totally lost track of time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Elizabeth. Plenty of time to enter the link :) So rewarding and relaxing to work in the garden.
DeleteNOT relaxing if you are trying to keep bamboo at bay.
DeleteVery well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks William :)

Thank you Mariette :)
DeleteThere's lot to see in the mural. I've seen the name Melski before.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew. Melski is very popular, has lots of murals around Perth and I've posted a few of her murals before.
DeleteLove the colour and the action in this huge mural, Sami!
ReplyDeleteThanks Teresa, plenty of colour :)
DeleteColorful, interesting mural. Crazy you came up with it today.
ReplyDeleteSubi-men built houses on Sundays. My Brother just yelled at me on the phone he has no time to visit me and that I´m a looser never have worked on a Saturday. I had invited them over - we have a ferries wheel and carousels right now.
Maybe - if he ever talks to me again - I´ll show him this mural (he once avoided me for a whole year after a fight).
So sorry to hear that Iris. Maybe he was just having a bad day, not easy to have a business during these times. Hopefully it will all be ok soon.
DeleteAnd nobody is a loser for not working Saturdays, I much rather not work Saturdays so I let the young girls do it, and they are happy the the hourly rate (1 1/2) they get paid on Saturday.
Looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rupam :)
DeleteQue festim de cor!!!

DeleteWow a great and very colorful mural.
ReplyDeleteThanks SC :)
DeleteIf the price of houses keeps moving into the stratosphere we may have to go back to kit houses! Great mural depicting some of the history of the area.
ReplyDeleteI agree David, it will probably be the solution. Right now a lot of people are living in cars/street due to high rates and lack of housing.
DeleteTom has written about kit houses in his area. I agree, housing prices are through the roof.
ReplyDeleteLove this mural with its history lesson.
Thanks Jackie. Somehow covid has increased house affordability all over the world.
