Monday Mural - The fish vendor

The "Varina" - female fish vendor -  is depicted here at Praça da Gaivota 112, Bairro dos Pescadores (Fishermen's neighbourhood) of Cascais (Portugal) for Muraliza Cascais 2016.

The mural was painted by Diogo Machado, AKA Add Fuel, who happens to have been born in Cascais.
I like his style of painting using stencils to create the traditional look of the blue and white Portuguese tiles.  With this specific mural I didn't like the lady's strange duck face.

I actually met the artist when he came to Perth to paint one of his murals at Curtin University during Perth Form 2016.

  1. I don't like the mouth either, but I love the blue and white tiles and the copying of them.

  3. I do love the Portuguese blue and white tile effect and the details on them are so incredibly well done but I agree with you about her face - rather off putting.

  5. The mouth seems odd there, I agree.
The rest of the mural is beautiful, though. It must be awesome to meet the artist (though for me... it would´ve been tough ;-)...).

    1. Thanks Iris. Because I knew he was Portuguese, I saw him taking a break and I greeted him in Portuguese and chatted for a while.

  6. When I first saw the overall image, I thought the face was a skeleton. Other than the face, the entire mural is lovely, especially because of the blue and white tiles.

How fortunate for you to have met this artist. I'm sure it was a thrilling moment for you.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth, yes it was greet meeting him. We just had Open house Perth this weekend and there were a few murals being painted and the touring group was able to chat to the artists, which was lovely.

  9. Gorgeous update on the tradition of blue and white tiles. The face looks more like a skull in the Mexican tradition. I'd love to know his intention. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

  10. It seems to be unanimous - we all dislike the duck face. I would now like to know why he painted it.

  13. I'm with you and the strange duck face but I do love thinking about the meaning behind these artistic changes, although this one is probably too deep for me to fathom!
    Have a great week

    1. Thanks Wren.I suppose each artist sees things their own way and we probably don't understand their thinking...

  14. I love the blue and white tiles ... I don't think you first notice the unusual face until you study the mural more closely!

    All the best Jan
