Thanks Sami

Painted for the Canning Bridge Mural Project in Nov 2022 by Darren Hutchens, at 872 Canning Highway, in the suburb of Applecross.

The area has undergone major change over the last few years with the demolition of old houses and the constructions of high rise apartment buildings, as it's an area just a few minutes from Perth's city centre.
The artist responded to the riverside location of Applecross and the adjacent "Jane Court" building, a modest mid-century block of flats, which I assume will sooner or later be demolished to give rise to a much taller apartment block, as you can see behind the first photo.

  1. I especially like the close ups. It's sad when buildings are destroyed, especially ones with such lovely murals attached.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth. It is sad, but I also understand that in that suburb, being so close to the city centre is prime area for high-rises. More and more people want to live closer to the city.

  2. I really like the sober, very 'ligne claire' graphics, reminiscent of the European comic strips of the 60s, and the soft colours.

  4. It's a beautiful mural. I love the mid-century look. I must say, I hate to see so many mid-century buildings being replaced. It happens everywhere.

    1. Thanks Sharon. Yes, it is sad that mid century buildings get pulled down. In the city we have a few that the facade was kept and a modern building built behind it.

  7. A shame when it would have to disappear. It brights up the area

  19. Dear Sami, I'm late, sorry!
I'm not a fan of high-rise buildings, but they are probably becoming more and more necessary. I really like the mural with the sea spirit, also because of the beach colors...
All the best and have a nice week, Traude
