This bright mural was painted by Darwin born artist Jason Lee, a Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri man, and it depicts the seven main seasons of the indigenous calendar. It was painted in 2018 for the Darwin Street Art Festival, at the entrance to a car park in West Lane, Darwin.
The seven seasons make far more sense in Australia than the western four seasons, by taking notice of what happens seasonally with our native plants, animals and weather.
The seven seasons are: • Balnba (rainy season) - November to December - long bums, black plum and bush potatoes. • Dalay (monsoon season) - January to March - crocodile laying eggs and big red apple fruiting. • Mayilema - March to April - dragonflies and bush cherry. • Damibila (Barramundi and bush fruit time) - April to June - black cockatoo and bush peanut. • Dinidjanggama (heavy dew time) - June to August - dugong and water Lillie’s. • Gurrulwa (big wind time) - July to September - stingray and yellow kapok. • Dalirrgang (build-up) - September to October - flying fox, cocky apple and cycad nuts.

ReplyDeleteThank you Tom :)
DeleteMy knowledge on this is zero. But that mural is fantastic -- a lot of work and such wonderful colors and interpretation.
ReplyDeleteNot too clued up on it either, although I know the Aboriginals consider that we have 7 instead of 4 seasons which actually makes more sense. Thanks Jeanie
DeleteVery beautiful! I had heard about the seven seasons.
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thank you Mae :)
DeleteHe's very clever! I like street art festivals.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had a street art festival for a couple of years, but they seem to be popular in Darwin. Thanks Amy
DeleteI love the idea of the seven seasons, definitely makes more sense and the mural is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks Martha, yes it does make more sense :)
DeleteIndigenous wisdom is becoming more appreciated here as well! Aloha
ReplyDeleteThanks you Cloudia :)
DeleteWe in the states have four seasons in some parts of the country and not in other parts. I think this is genius, well done, colorful, and quite beautiful. Jason did a great job and I learned something new in the process.
ReplyDeleteThank you Elizabeth, glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteNice, aren't they.
ReplyDeleteI think we may have eight seasons here, of course quite different to those in Darwin and even your own.
I though we had 6 in Western Australia. Thanks Andrew
DeleteI'm very passionate about Aboriginal paintings, and I'm more familiar with the traditional dreaming works. But the extension of Aboriginal painting into contemporary art or urban works also touches me. This one is very beautiful, mixing tradition and modernity
ReplyDeleteThanks Kwarkito, glad you enjoyed this mural.
DeleteIt's very well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks William.
DeleteGreat mural. Yes. They always knew what is going on in nature, I learned a lot. I sadly have to admit I never spoke to any one of "them" but to a little boy who could barely walk, I was too shy... If we could travel again...
ReplyDeleteGreat. Now II have an earworm... "If we could turn back time..."
Jump over snakes! That, we did. Once.
Sadly I don't think I've ever spoken to an Aboriginal person either.
DeleteWish we could turn back time indeed Iris...
Étnico e bem bonito.
