Fifteen storeys high at 309 George st, the girl with roses in her hair, holding an "obey" sign with a waratah (NSW floral emblem) in its circle was painted by American artist Shepard Fairey in June 2017 for the VividSydney 2017 exhibition (the same light show I've been posting about on my last two posts).
It is Sydney's biggest mural at 44mt high and 28mt wide (144,36 x 91,86 ft) and required about 400 cans of paint in aqua, blue and cream.

Looking forward to your mural finds this week. Thanks, Sami.
Fairey is also known for his 2007 "Hope" portrait of former President Barack Obama and is the founder of OBEY Clothing .
You know it is almost poignant to look at the image of Barak Obama and to contemplate what the citizens of the United States replaced him with. They went from dignity and decency to disgrace and disgust overnight.
ReplyDeleteHope things change for Americans.
Delete...great mural, I love Shepard Fairey's work. His posters are awful. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom. This is the first live one I've seen.
Deletethe fresco is very beautiful and I finally know now that waratah is something else than the name of a rugby team :-) Have a nice week
ReplyDeleteThank you Kwarkito. Yes the Waratah is first of all a flower, the rugby team is also from New South Wales, named after their flower emblem.
DeleteDearest Sami,
ReplyDeleteThat was an incredible mural; both in size and in beauty!
Hugs,
Mariette
Thank you Mariette.

DeleteBeautifully done.
ReplyDeleteThanks William.
DeleteCool art
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam.
DeleteThat is really an impressive mural, both for size and for the way it simplifies and dramatizes the subject.
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
It looks very simple but certainly impressive. Thanks Mae.
DeleteIt is a very impressive mural, but it reminds me a little of the logo for one of those chain coffee shops and I can't remember which one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew. I think the artist has used the "obey" logo on more of his murals.
DeleteGreat. I've been trying to get there at the right time of day to photograph this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim.
DeleteTransmite essa sensação de paz.
ReplyDeleteBoa semana
Concordo Pedro, obrigada e boa semana.
DeleteWow, this is beautiful and she looks so peaceful, too!
ReplyDeleteFunny, "Outdoor Man" is on TV and they talk about... Obama :-)
(Sad he couldn´t stay longer! Chancellor Merkel is here since forever, not good, either)
It's true, even though she hold the sign Obey she looks very peaceful.
DeleteNot aware of "Outdoor man" just looked it up, not showing in Australia.
I agree politicians shouldn't stay in power too long.
Fantástico este mural, aproveito para desejar uma boa semana.

Obrigada Francisco, boa semana para si tambem.
DeleteA big mural but it looks a bit at an advert for something.
ReplyDeleteThanks SC, I think the Obey sign makes it look like an advert, but it's not :)
DeleteIt is really a huge one!
ReplyDeleteA very big one! Thanks Mariette.
DeleteGosh it is a huge mural Sammi, all my favourite colours 💙💚
ReplyDeleteIt was huge, and I like the colours too! Thanks Grace.
DeleteI was totally impressed by this incredible mural. The size alone was overwhelming. I wonder how long it took Fairey to design and paint it.
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to see Obama's Hope, too. I can't believe people in my country were so "gung ho" to elect a tv personality as our leader. I just hope we do better in 2020.
Thanks Elizabeth. From what I read somewhere it took 3 days to paint the mural, which I think is impressive!
DeleteBest of luck for the next elections :)
What a beauty, Sami! :) :) Love the Obama too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joanne.
Deletevery zen expression. always admiring huge murals.
ReplyDeleteThanks Klara.
DeleteI love his graphic style!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pat.
DeleteIt's a lovely mural. I hope Shepard Fairey didn't get in trouble this time for copyright violation like he did with the Obama poster. (That fiasco cost him 25K USD plus legal costs.)
ReplyDeleteWow, had no idea about that. I think here he was invited to paint and he held talks about art during the Vivid Festival too.
DeleteI love the look of it. It reminds me of vintage packaging.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does look very vintage Jeanie. Thanks
DeleteSuch a lovely piece of art, and it took 400 cans of paint?! Wow! Hugs, RO
ReplyDeleteReally huge RO. Thanks :)
DeleteThat's one big mural … but I like it!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thanks Jan, it is gigantic!
