Monday Mural - Lisbon Underground city
Quite a few of Lisbon's underground (subway) stations are decorated with fabulous tile panels, but I found this to be one of the most fascinating.

Nao me lembro de o ter visto. Assumo que nao passei por essa escada rolante.
ReplyDeleteSe calhar, pois ele esta la ha uns anos. Obrigada Catarina
DeleteHard to beat a tiled mural, especially in Lisbon. So colourful
ReplyDeleteVery typical of Lisbon indeed, thanks Debbie.
DeleteSo redolent of the city itself
ReplyDeleteYes, goes well with the city, thanks Cloudia
DeleteVery colourful. Being tiles, it will last well.
ReplyDeleteHopefully a life time, thanks Andrew.
DeleteThe tile work is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sallie.
Delete...what a colorful addition to the underground!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom.
DeleteNice art
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam.
DeleteO que só prova que Lisboa não é só bonita à superfície.
ReplyDeleteBoa semana
Verdade Pedro, ha imensa arte nas linhas do metro. Boa semana.
DeleteIt sure makes the underground a lot friendlier!!
ReplyDeleteI think so too, at least there's always some art to look at. Thanks Iris.
DeleteOMGoodness. This is JAW dropping gorgeous. You found a gem this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks Elizabeth, glad you liked it. Unfortunately I didn't travel much on the underground, but most stations in Lisbon have a lot of tiled murals on their walls and sometimes even statues.
DeleteThey are wonderful, never known he had made these underground tiles!
ReplyDeleteHe has some colourful work, thanks Marianne.
DeleteIt are tiles but lovely painted in a way that is not in the Portugal way at all. Very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteYes, not very typical of Portuguese tiles. Thanks Stef
DeleteHello Sami,
ReplyDeleteNIce shots of these special kind of art.
Maybe it prevents people from setting up their own graffiti.
Best regards,
Marco
Yes I suppose so, if the walls are already covered with some pretty artwork, taggers don't damage it. Thanks Marco.
DeleteOh yes I remember this station it's one of the most beautiful and colored. Have a nice week
ReplyDeleteThanks Kwarkito. Orient Station has so many beautiful murals :)
DeleteHow gorgeous, a nice way to wait for a train. Moscow also has stunning subway stations.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jackie. I haven't been to Moscow, but I heard they have beautiful stations.
DeleteIt's beautiful Sami, such a lot of work placing all those tiny tiles. Hope you are having a lovely week, you must be so excited to see your daughter ✨
ReplyDeleteThanks Grace, yes very excited, just 2 hours to go.
DeleteIt took almost 2 years to complete the mural.
É de uma grande beleza este painel de azulejos.

Obrigada Francisco.
DeleteThis one makes me feel like I'm looking down out the window of a skyscraper, seeing a viewpoint most of us miss. I wonder if the artist needed to take breaks from painting all those rectangles! I'd get dizzy! And what a great idea to join this with a link party! Off now to see about that big black cat face!
ReplyDeleteThanks J, there's certainly a lot of work and time was spent on this mural!
DeleteFrom a construction/technique point of view this is particularly interesting. Since all those tiles had to have been painted/glazed and then fired before they went up on the wall, he had to have them laid out as he worked on it to make sure the windows lined up and all the other details made sense. So, they'd have to be numbered, then fired and reassembled. Which leads me to believe he had a very large studio. Any other potters/tile people in there know more about this?
ReplyDeleteThe panel was designed by the artist but it was a famous tile factory that made the tiles. It took about 2 years for the panel to be made and assembled. A lot of work!!
DeleteI've always liked his work but hadn't seen any pics of this one! They may have produced the tiles at a commercial tile company.
ReplyDeleteYes Pat, it was produced by a tile factory.
DeleteThe tile art work is excellent, and so colourful.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thanks Jan, very colourful indeed.
DeleteVery colorful. I imagine the brightness is welcome in the Underground.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda.

DeleteDearest Sami,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful executed tile mosaic after Hundertwasser's design. Wondering if he still got to see the end results...
You have shown us the most extraordinary murals the world has to offer.
Hugs,
Mariette
I hope he did Mariette, he died 2 years after the installation. Thanks Mariette

DeleteSuch lovely, bright and intricate work! Love it so much! Hugs...RO
ReplyDeleteThanks RO, it is a beautiful mural!
DeleteThey're hard to photograph because of the reflected light, aren't they? This is a fun one, Sami. :) :)
ReplyDeleteYes, not easy. Thanks Joanne.
DeleteThank you for sending me the link to this post, dear Sami. My husband and I were in Portugal in May 2009, including in Lisboa, but unfortunately we didn't see the Oriente subway station then. That's a shame - but at least I can now get to know it through your photos! I really like Hundertwasser's colorful, playful art :-)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, Traude
