Monday Murals - Quokkas - 3D Big trash animals

I love murals and street art. If you like murals or have a mural you'd like to post, this meme is for you.  Just follow the Linky steps below.  Once you start looking you will find murals everywhere.  The "Monday Mural" meme goes live on Monday at 12,01AM, Perth,Western Australian time. Be sure to link back to this blog and visit your fellow posters. Looking forward to your mural finds this week.  Thanks Sami

On Monday 23rd February I had met up with Iris in Fremantle to go and photograph murals.

I knew from social media that a Portuguese artist - Bordalo II, had been painting a mural in Fremantle in the last few days of the previous week, so I hoped to be able to catch him still painting.

The mural was finished, still fenced in, but we found the artist, Artur Bordalo and had a quick chat to him and learned that this was his first artwork in Australia and that he will be coming back towards the end of the year to create another mural for the Swan Valley Art trail.

Bordalo's grandfather named Artur Real Bordalo (1925–2017) was a well-known landscape artist in Portugal.

Another one of his 3D Big trash animals, using plastics and other discarded materials to highlight environmental pollution, can be seen at The Piazza Fremantle (South Terrace). This time a mom and baby quokka - the little marsupials native to Western Australia, mainly seen in Rottnest Island.

The Piazza was looking quite unloved, and is now going through a revival, with further artworks being painted later in the year in a mural festival to take place in November.

And to show how lovable they are, here are a few pictures of the little quokkas taken at the small Rottnest Island , 19km from Perth.

  1. Marsupials always look very cute. I think it’s because of their bright eyes. Nice murals you found.

    1. They are cute :) The island Rottnest was so named because the Dutch that discovered it thought those were giant rats.

  7. First off: The Indiana :-)
Yes, he did some wonderful work and aww, yes, this time it was not enough of it to revisit Rotto. They are soooo cute. My big Niece, when I showed her a pic, "A big rat?! You visited rats?!"
    Well, close ;-)

    1. The Indiana photo taken when both of us and Grace visited Cottesloe to see if the sculptures were there yet. I visited yesterday as they were closing today. They are a little nice than rats, but the Dutch certainly thought they were rats, hence the name of the island - Rats nets. Maybe next time you can visit.

  8. I think this bas-relief, made from natural materials, is absolutely brilliant. It’s a very original and truly astonishing piece of work. I didn’t know these little marsupials existed – they’re so cute.

    1. Thank you Kwarkito. Quokkas basically only exist on Rottnest Island and then in zoos around Australia. They are cute and very enquisitive.

  10. Again marvellous murals dear Sami, but this time they are by far beaten by these so cute quokkas. Never heard about that...I had to consult Dr.Google and in german they are called :"Kurzschwanzkangaroo" (short-tail kangaroo).
Thanks for showing these wonderful critters
    Have a good time

  11. How awesome that the artist uses recycled materials in his murals! That really makes a statement. I love this 3D mural of the quokkas!

  12. Those quokkas are adorable. I've never even heard of them. Those murals are delightful. I like the realism feel. So many are almost too abstract to me, though colorful. These have wonderful details and personality.

    1. Thank you Jeanie. The quokkas are adorable and such curious creatures. I think at Rottnest Island they got used to all the visitors and are always looking for some crumbs, which they shouldn't have of course.
