Some odd murals around Viseu.
Painted by "Bigod" aka João Domingos, inspired by the winemaking traditions of the Dão region (in the centre of Portugal). It can be found in Rua Escura (Dark street :) )
"In Vino Veritas" (In wine there is truth), painted for the 2016 Tons de Primavera (Colours of Spring) by Draw & Contra (Frederico Draw and Rodrigo Alma), at Rua Silva Gaio 52.
This last one called "Barbary Baby and Mom Monkey" , was created by Bordalo II, aka Artur Bordalo, who was born in Lisbon in 1987.
He grew up watching his grandfather - Artur Real Bordalo da Silva, a famous Portuguese artist, paint landscapes of Lisbon.
He's renowned for his large scale art installations using trash and discarded materials, to raise awareness about waste and environmental issues. The mural can be seen in a dilapidated house at Rua do Coval 219 and was created in 2020.
This mural seems to have lost some pieces...
He's got some beautiful murals all over the world, I saw two of his murals in Lisbon a few years ago, and there's one in Porto too.
The Fox - at Avenida 24 Julho (Avenue 24 July), in Belem (Lisbon) not far from the Mercado da Ribeira (a food and produce market). |
The 3-dimensional murals are neat, especially the rabbit.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thank you Mae :)
Delete...Sami, these are fabulous, the Fox and Rabbit are my favorites. Thanks for hosting, I wish you a wonderful new week.
ReplyDeleteThank you Tom, they are fantastic!
DeleteBeautiful post, Sami!
ReplyDeleteI love Bordalo’s work and it’s always impressive how he turns waste into meaningful, emotional art. The monkey mural is so expressive – even if it's missing a few pieces now, it still speaks loudly!
The wine-themed ones are charming too, and I really appreciate the background you shared for each artist.
I'll be joining Monday Murals as well, with some street art from Craiova, Romania — but just a little later, when it turns Monday here too (Romanian time). I'll come back and add my link then 😊
Thanks for hosting!
Thanks for your visit Mihaela and hope to see you participate in Monday Murals more often.
DeleteI love the work of Bordalo II. Those murals are so creative and clever. Those creations would look great in any gallery.
ReplyDeleteHe's a very clever artist. Thanks Sharon
DeleteWspaniałe! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit Sivka.

I really liked the 3D bee!!
Thank you very much, I had never seen 3D murals before,
how in harmony with nature!!
Thank you Katerina. Very talented artists :)
DeleteThese 3D arts are so impressive
ReplyDeleteThanks Roentare
DeleteThose monkeys are interesting. It would be fun to see it fully intact.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeanie, I was disappointed to see it looked very shabby.
DeleteThese are really great! The bee and the rabbit are my favs. The rabbit is a brilliant use of the corner too. #MuralMondays
ReplyDeleteThank you Lydia.
DeleteThe works are very cleverly done, and like murals, they disappear in time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew. Some disappear quickly, other stay longer thankfully.
DeleteO Bordalo é genial.
ReplyDeleteBoa semana
Muito bom artista. Boa semana Pedro
DeleteThe rabbit is particularly arresting, though they all make an impact. The first blue one is the most tranquil.
ReplyDeleteSusan
Thank you Susan.
DeleteTruly amazing mural works. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week ahead. Greetings.
Thanks Rupam. Enjoy the rest of the week.
DeleteWe saw the first two Bordalos in Lisbon, missed the Porto one. We also have one here in Toronto in Little Portugal!
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you have one of his murals in Toronto. We don't have one of his murals in Australia at all. He has a few more in Lisbon, but haven't yet had a chance to go and see them. Maybe in my next trip!
DeleteWhat beautiful murals! I need to keep my eyes open. We have them here but I haven't photographed many.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sue. Glad you found one already. Hope to see more from around your area.
DeleteAgain an impressing place for wonderful murals.
ReplyDeleteHave a good time
Violetta
Thank you Violetta :)
DeleteThose last ones are really interesting, Sami.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pat.
DeleteThese murals from Viseu are fantastic. It's always inspiring to see how street art can transform public spaces. I especially love Bordalo II's work, using trash to create powerful messages like "Barbary Baby and Mom Monkey." The way his art raises awareness about environmental issues is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteHave you noticed if Bordalo II's messages become more impactful when his art is in more unexpected or dilapidated locations, like the house in Viseu?
Thanks Melody. I think his art is always impactful irrespective of where it is found, I do find myself looking at the bits and pieces he uses that get discarded on a daily basis.
DeleteInteresting post. That poor bee!
ReplyDeleteThe ivy is taking over :) Thanks Linda.
DeleteYou sure found some impressive murals. I love them, but most of the ones I find are in downtown areas with no good place to park. I'll keep trying.
ReplyDeleteThanks Betty. Hope you manage to photograph a few murals sometime.
DeleteHe's done some amazing work, hasn't he? And inspired others. Have you seen The Otter at Alcoutim, Sami?
ReplyDeleteHi Johanna, no I haven't seen it, didn't even know of its existence. Maybe on my next trip to the Algarve. Thanks, enjoy the rest of the week.
