Monday Mural - Spring

Just one more day until Spring officially starts in Australia, so I thought I would post a floral mural.    It's called "wildflower wall ", painted in September 2018 by local resident artist Lian with the support of Vic Park Collective, and can be seen at Posier Lane, Victoria Park.

I came across it as well as half a dozen other murals, last week when I went to pick up a pair of bedside tables to paint, in the suburb of Victoria Park.  

When we moved to Australia 13 years ago we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment in Victoria Park during 3 months until our container arrived from Portugal, and we really loved the area. It's such a vibrant and diverse inner city suburb, full of great restaurants and quaint shops, and just 3km south east of Perth's city centre.

Signs - Street names

A few street signs I gathered from a few of my photo files.

Portuguese street names in Perth - the first two are actually in my suburb.

Madeira Road was named after the owners of a big farm in this area bought by a couple who came from the Island of Madeira just over 60 years ago.  The suburb is now just a 20min drive to the city centre, but back then is was far from the city and they were probably the only ones around...

The farm was later subdivided, and partially sold for houses and a shopping centre. About 2 years ago Mr S died, and in July this year the original "palace" was sold and the owner moved into a Retirement village.  That lady, the original owner is my friend Idalia. We are actually going to have dinner with her at her new place this Friday.

Douro Place is in West Perth, but there is a Douro Street in Fremantle.

In fact there are a couple of Portuguese street names in Fremantle too, being the area where most of the original Portuguese immigrants from Madeira lived, to be close to the sea as a lot of them were fishermen, but I just couldn't find my photos with these.

Kirribilli Avenue is where the Kirribilli House is located, that being the secondary residence for Australia's Prime Minister, when he is not in Canberra.

New Bedford in Massachussets has a huge Portuguese community from the Azores. My maternal uncle and cousins live in New Bedford, Mass., although they went from Mozambique to the United States.

Monday Mural - The Swing

Another mural from the archives, taken ages ago in Mandurah, a coastal city situated approximately 72 kilometres (45 mi) south of Perth.

This gorgeous swing mural was painted by Mandurah young muralist Tahnee Kelland, in March 2017, on the walls of Paper Planes (a homewares and fashion store) at 5 Mandurah Terrace.  The colourful side walk bricks were also painted by the artist.

Signs - at Curtin University

All these signs are from Perth's Curtin University, the largest university in Western Australia, with over 50 thousand students and 3000 staff members and also operating in Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, and Mauritius.

It was named after  John Curtin, who was Prime Minister of Australia from 1941 to 1945.

The University campus occupies an area of 116 hectares (286 acres), has a modern welcoming feel, lots of parks, eateries, sports facilities, sculptures and plenty of murals too.

The University has quite a few coffee shops and eateries around campus, and here are a few signs from some of these.

Monday Mural - Happy pets

A mural seen on my way home from Fremantle, after our Christmas in July lunch on the 26th July.

This colourful mural, was painted on the walls of  The Happy Pet Place, a Veterinary clinic at 352 South Street in the suburb of O'Connor. It's cute isn't it?

Monday Mural - East West Design

When I was in Fremantle recently I again photographed this mural, which I posted a few years ago. I thought it was time to revisit as I consider it to be one of the best murals in Perth.

It is 78mt long (256feet) and is painted on the exterior of a furniture and homewares shop East West Design at South Terrace in South Fremantle.

This extensive mural was commissioned by the owners of the shop, and was painted by the talented artist Graeme Miles Richards, a New Zealander who resides in Perth, and it took him over 7 months to paint.
The various shopfront designs reflect the eclectic mix of wares they sell - from Asia, Africa and Europe, and this mural was paint.
I took over 30 photos of this beauty, so much to see... and here are a few of them.
